One of the biggest drawcards of living in Laingholm is the sheer volume of outdoor recreation on your doorstep. Within minutes of home, you have access to beaches, bush walks, and coastal tracks that most Aucklanders only visit on long weekends. Here are some of our favourites.
Huia Beach
Just a 10-minute drive from Laingholm, Huia is the local beach and a genuine gem. The sheltered bay is perfect for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The Huia Store serves great coffee and food. On a calm summer evening, watching the sunset over the Manukau Harbour from Huia is hard to beat.
The Huia Dam track starts nearby and takes you through regenerating bush to the historic dam. It’s an easy walk suitable for families and takes about 45 minutes return.
Whatipu
Further along the coast from Huia, Whatipu is wild, dramatic, and utterly stunning. The black sand beach stretches along the southern head of the Manukau Harbour entrance. It’s remote, windswept, and feels like the edge of the world.
The caves at Whatipu are worth exploring, and the coastal walk from Whatipu to Karekare is one of Auckland’s best overnight tramps. Even a short visit to Whatipu for a beach walk is time well spent.
Arataki Visitor Centre and nature trail
The Arataki Visitor Centre on Scenic Drive is the gateway to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park. The short nature trail loop behind the centre offers sweeping views across the ranges and down to the coast. It’s an easy walk and a great starting point for visitors new to the area.
From Arataki, you can access a network of tracks heading in every direction. The staff at the centre are knowledgeable and can recommend walks suited to your fitness level and available time.
Laingholm to Titirangi coastal walk
This local walk follows the coastline along the Manukau Harbour foreshore. It’s flat, easy, and offers beautiful views across the water. Perfect for an after-work stroll or a weekend walk with the family. You’ll often see locals walking their dogs, fishing from the rocks, or simply enjoying the quiet.
Kura Track
Starting from the end of Laingholm Drive, the Kura Track winds through native bush along the harbour edge. It’s a well-maintained Department of Conservation track that connects through to Foster Bay. The bush here is beautiful, with nikau palms, tree ferns, and mature pohutukawa along the coastal sections.
Piha and Karekare
While not quite as close as Huia, the west coast surf beaches of Piha and Karekare are about a 25-minute drive from Laingholm. Piha is Auckland’s most famous surf beach, with Lion Rock and the powerful black sand waves. Karekare is quieter, featured in The Piano, and has a stunning waterfall track nearby.
Living the outdoor lifestyle
This is what sets Laingholm apart from most Auckland suburbs. Weekday evenings can include a quick beach visit or a bush walk. Weekends can be spent exploring different tracks, swimming, or just sitting on Huia Beach watching the harbour. It’s not a lifestyle you have to drive hours to access. It’s right there, every day.
If you’re considering a move to Laingholm and the outdoor lifestyle is part of the appeal, come and spend a weekend here. Walk the tracks, visit the beaches, have lunch in Titirangi. You’ll see why people who live here feel like they’ve found something special.
